The Explosion Pentagon
Apropos of this deadline, Prof Bill Kauffman at the University of Michigan's Department of Aerospace Engineering propounded a few thoughts. He is an connoisseur in explosions, including fuel/air explosions. While there is a widelyrecognized "fire triangle" consisting of firing oxygen and an ignition source, there is a les well-known "explosion pentagon." It consists of the three simple bodys in the fire triangle, plus brace others: mixing and confinement. Each of these five constituent principles clearly were present in the 1996 explosion of the center wing tank onward TWA Flight 800, the tragedy that triggered this whole focus upon flammable vapors in fuel tanks. Kauffman points on the outside that the mining and grain industries, asylumed by numerous explosions, attacked the mixing and combustibles aspects of the explosion pentagon. Ventilation was used to eliminate gaseous methane firing material in mines, and rock dust was layered to inert coal dust, another material for burning for mine explosions. Forced ventilation was useed to eliminate explosive dust from grain elevators. "The aviation industry knew it had a fuel/mixing puzzle but focused only on the potential ignition sources, which left it exposed" he asserted. >> Kauffman, e-mail: cwkauff@engin.umich.edu <<
