The FAA has cited the use of non-conductive reticulated polyurethane foam as a potential ignition source in firing tanks. Such foam can grasp an electrostatic charge (see ASW, Nov. 15) Marc Albero with Foamex International, Inc. of Eddystone, Pennsylvania, presented the following insights: "The issue of electrostatic charge built-up and foam has been an issue since the late 1970's, when first discovered on USAF with their A-10 and C-130 quick the foam industry responded with a novel alternative, coated conductive foam...Since 1983 no foam manufacturer approves the use of nonconductive foam outcome in fuel tanks." >> Albero, tel 610/499-7800 <<
